How easy it has become for shutterbugs to create their own special contact sheet and develop timeless photos. Fashion photos have more scope for creativity as they can resize the images for better results long after the frame has been frozen.

Coming to the editing table after a day’s shoot can be a tedious job for the fashion photographer. But if an image of a super model or product has to be resized, there is no way out expect for the editing suites. There is immense competition within the niche world of fashion photography. The top ones in business depend on several photo editing techniques (not just air brushing and retouching) to remain in business. Just like the way the shutterbug eats, breathes and prays fashion photography, the same is the case with the professional designers who work on the images.  Both use their imagination, experience, inherent talent and skills with the help of Photshop to bring out incredible pictures. However in the case of the photo editor, he had an additional skill-technical brilliance that rises to the challenge of making the visual more stunning. Both use a wide range of color palette to bring attention to their work.

At times the DPI quality of the image is not sufficient to get a good quality image. Most professionals know that unless the image is a minimum 300 dpi, it is not use trying to make a swan out of an ugly duckling. Photoshop has image resize control in its panel. However it can be used so long as it does not stretch the photo out of proportion. If a photo has 180 DPI then the texture in the backdrop brings it to a higher resolution. But fashion photos usually do not have such silly issues. They may wish to use the drop shadow or use the gradients to change the texture of the picture. Most fashion photos use color photography and these are the images that come to the editing table. Usually a picture that is not in high resolution needs to be resized. Although a photographer himself can crop it to size, but then it makes sense to send the work to the photo editor. They can study the content of the picture and advise what would be appropriate.

Once the images are resized and processed, they are sharper and visibly more pleasing. Advanced photographers prefer another professional retouch. Such work can also be useful to gallery owners. They have paintings that come in less than 180 dpi prints. They are also able to use the services of the editing suites to cover up and bring out stunning prints of the original artwork.

However, a word of caution- Do not expects the same magical results from Photoshop if the basic image is flawed or below resolution quality. PS is likely to create pixels, when a layer is made. It is an addition to the native file. This is an additional which may reveal that the picture is ‘touched’ or ‘resized’. If one is okay then it is fine. The result may not be entirely to the expectation.   An online lab like clipping path will be able to do its best to bring the original flavor… rather than crop it unfashionably!
